This town is located in the heart of the Marais Breton in the Vendée. The salt winning activity has long been the main activity of Bouin (this town was the most productive of all the salt marshes areas on the atlantic coast). Today oyster farming (180 farmers, oysters “Vendée Atlantique”) and aquaculture have become the main activity of the former salt marshes.
In 2003 eight wind turbines have been built in the polders of Bouin. These wind turbines are among the first installed in France. Since then they have become a true attraction, bringing tourists to this area and Port-du-Bec. They are capable of powering 20,000 homes.
